A brief history of online shopping
The inception of the Internet took place earlier than you may think. The first means of transaction processing (OLTP) was first launched in the 1960's. It was used by American Airlines for flight ticket reservations. Later, in the mid-nineties, the development of the Internet created better conditions for establishing computerized retail activity. It was then that Amazon emerged as a book selling service and eBay as an auctions resource. By this point in time, there were 16 million people selling online, and as of 2013 - 2,749 million people were selling online! The first online-shoppers were men who worked in the computer industry aged 30 and above. Nowadays almost everyone shops online. The shoppers are divided into four categories: those who seek variety, those who appreciate the convenience, balanced buyers and shoppers that are store-oriented. However, the shopping experience has become a culture in and of itself, coining such terms as Black Friday (the online version), Cyber Monday (complimenting the previous one).

How is online shopping reshaping retail?
The online shopping experience grows wider every year; hence many retailers expand their regular activity with online shops as well. This was accepted by all major brands and there are a number of trends that are currently shaping the experience:
1. Marketplaces – offering price comparison services and variety.
2. Mobile-friendly shopping – a vast percentage of the shopping is being conducted on the go and all platforms are adjusting to that.
3. Marketing – the competition among online retailers is always on the rise, so marketing is an integral part of the job.
4. VR as the next technological step – as the technology evolves it creates an interactive means of communication between retailers and buyers.

Black Friday & Cyber Monday
The day after Thanksgiving officially marks the beginning of the holidays shopping season. The retailers use this opportunity for special offers and this day usually grosses much higher amounts than usual. In 2017 American shoppers spent 5$ billion during Black Friday.
Cyber Monday follows right after the “Black Friday” weekend, offering some more special deals and discounts to continue the gift shopping frenzy. Moreover, the tendency is stretching more and more, so many online analysts refer to the phenomenon as “Cyber Week”.  The sales spike on this occasion varies from 16% and up to 26% (the highest peak was achieved in 2017).

Online shopping stats today and projections for the near future
The driving force behind the immediate shopping experience is millennials (born 1980-1995) and Generation Z (1996-2010). As of 2017 it was reported that 67% of the millennials prefer to do their shopping online. 46% of shoppers are expecting to see more product comparisons from e-commerce websites. The amount of online shoppers is rising higher and higher every year, and expected to reach 2.14 billion by 2021. The important nuances for the buyers are fair return policy (may repel 80% of shoppers when inconvenient), more detailed information (88%), and ratings (74%).
