Christie's NY Does it Again

This week at the Christie’s NY auction, the 3 items I reviewed recently, have performed as predicted.

The first item was the 5.29 carat Fancy Intense Purplish Pink. It was valued at between $3.5-$5 million, and ended up selling higher than the high end of the spectrum and closed for $5,765,000 or just under $1.1 million per carat.

This 6.54 ct Fancy Intense Pink IF clarity diamond was sold by Sotheby’s NY sold on December 5, 2012 and is the current record holder for this sub-category at $1.3 million per carat. There is a good reason for it, it is extremely rare with its Internally Flawless clarity.

This diamond, a 5.29 ct Fancy Intense Pink diamond with VS2 clarity was sold at Sotheby’s in Geneva, which has the same weight, and clarity as our current stone, sold in 2009 for a mere $387k per carat. This makes for a 180% increase in value in under 6 years.

The 5.04 carat, round Fancy Gray Blue sold for $2,285,000 or $453k per carat. A fantastic valuation; this item sold at the top 91% percentile of its estimate prediction.

The last item was the 6.57 carat Fancy Purplish Pink. It sold for $1.205 million placing it in the lower end of the valuation ($1.2-$1.5m), but is still a fantastic value for your investment dollars.

The last item worth mentioning, simply because it broke a record, is the 4 strand pearl necklace that went under the hammer. It was estimated to sell between $3.8 million and $4.5 million, and ended up selling for $5.093 million, making it a record price for a pearl necklace.
