What you are actually paying for

Four things set the price of a ruby, and weight is the least important of them.

  • Color does most of the work. The target is a vivid, pure red called Pigeon Blood. Brown or orange undertones pull value down hard. a hint of blue or purple pushes it up.
  • Tone and origin dictate value. The intensity of the color increases the value. The origin of the stone is of the utmost importance: Burma commands the highest value. Some rubies glow in daylight because of low iron content, which is why certain stones seem lit from inside. The second most important origin is Mozambique.
  • Size is genuinely scarce. Fine ruby above 3 carats is rare enough that price per carat steps up sharply rather than climbing smoothly.

Treatment, and the one thing to avoid

A lot of rubies on the market are heated. We are mostly looking for unheated rubies. The process is centuries old, permanent, stable, and accepted everywhere. A heated ruby is a legitimate stone and represents the large majority of what anyone buys.

The thing to watch for is different. Lead-glass filling is a heavy treatment that pours molten glass into surface-reaching fractures to make badly included material look clean. These stones are worth a small fraction of standard heated ruby, they can be damaged by ordinary jewelry repair, and they turn up constantly in the wider market.

A report that says "heated" is a normal, good stone. A report that says "fracture filled" or "glass residue" is something else entirely, and should be priced accordingly. Every stone here is disclosed.

Where rubies come from

  • Burma (Mogok) is the historic benchmark, known for pure red and strong fluorescence. Scarce and priced accordingly.
  • Mozambique (Montepuez) has supplied most of the world's fine ruby since 2009, with excellent clarity and larger sizes.
  • Thailand, Madagascar, and Tanzania produce useful commercial material, generally darker or more included.

Origin affects price independently of appearance, which is why laboratory origin opinions matter above a certain value.

FAQ'S ABOUT RUBY

Color above all: a vivid, pure red with no brown. After that, clarity, cut, natural fluorescence, size, and origin. Fine ruby is rarer than fine diamond, which is why the best stones can exceed diamond prices per carat.

Unheated stones are genuinely rare and carry a large premium. Both heated and unheated stones are legitimate choices. What matters is that you know which you are buying and that the color is appealing to your eye.

A heavily treated stone whose fractures have been filled with glass to disguise poor clarity. It is worth a fraction of a standard heated ruby and can be damaged by routine jewelry repair. Always check the report.

Yes. Ruby ranks 9 on the Mohs scale, second only to diamond, making it one of the few colored stones truly suited to a ring worn every day.
