Ruby Jewelry

Ruby is hard enough to wear in any piece, so the choice between a ring, earrings, a pendant or a bracelet comes down to how you want the red to be seen. This collection covers all our ruby jewelry, set with natural rubies and disclosed treatment.

Where your budget goes in each piece

Ruby is 9 on the Mohs scale, so durability does not rank the pieces. What changes is which quality of the stone the piece puts on show.

  • A ring is seen up close and often in the shadow of the hand. Color and cut quality in a single stone matter most, and this is where a top grade ruby earns its price.
  • Earrings are two stones that must agree. Part of the price is the matching rather than the stones.
  • A pendant is seen face on in daylight against skin, which is where natural fluorescence shows. A Burmese stone lifts most visibly here.
  • A bracelet carries many smaller stones. Consistency along the line matters more than the quality of any one ruby.

What every ruby certificate should tell you

For any center stone of real value, a report from GIA, SSEF, Gübelin, GRS or AGL confirms three things.

  • Natural, not synthetic
  • Treatment, heated or unheated. A lot of rubies on the market are heated. unheated stones are scarce and carry a substantial premium, and they are our buying focus.
  • Origin. Burma ranks first and Mozambique second. War and floods have dramatically reduced the supply of Burmese gems, which is why Burmese origin on a report now carries more weight than ever.

Outside our collection, the ruby to avoid is the lead-glass filled stone, heavily included material with its fractures filled with glass. It is worth a fraction of a standard heated ruby and can be damaged by the heat of an ordinary jewelry repair. Tell any jeweler a stone's treatment before they work on the piece.

Building a matched ruby set

A necklace and earring set is harder to assemble than the pieces bought separately, because every ruby in the suite has to agree.

  • Match tone before hue. Two reds at different tones look wrong together. slight hue variation reads as natural.
  • Match fluorescence. Stones from different origins can agree indoors and separate in daylight.
  • Build outward from the largest stone. Match the earrings to the pendant, not the other way around.

FAQ'S ABOUT RUBY JEWELRY

The center stone sets it. An unheated Burmese ruby of pigeon blood color sits in a different bracket from a heated stone of the same size, so color, origin and treatment matter more than weight.

Look for pieces where the center stone carries a laboratory report confirming natural origin, treatment and origin. We have been a family owned colored stone house since 1979, and treatment is disclosed on every ruby we sell.

Yes, in every form. Ruby is second only to diamond in hardness, so rings, earrings, pendants and bracelets all handle daily wear.

Pigeon blood: a vivid, pure red with no brown, sometimes with a slight blue undertone. More intense color increases value, though you should choose the red that appeals to your eye.

Center stones of real size can carry individual reports. Accent stones are graded as a group, which is standard across the industry.
