A Wolf in Canary’s Clothing

The recently released film of legendary director Martin Scorcese starring Leonardo DiCaprio, The Wolf of Wall Street, is based on the true story of Jordan Belfort (played by DiCaprio), a stockbroker from humble beginnings. The film chronicles his life from the founding of a massive boiler room operation and making and losing millions of dollars before finally being arrested and jailed for securities fraud and money laundering.

The rollicking reenactment of the excesses that flow from easy money has garnered critical acclaim and the film has already received numerous awards and been nominated for many more.

Spoiler alert:

In one scene, Belfort (played by DiCaprio) proposes to his girlfriend, Naomi (played by Australian actress Margot Robbie) and pulls out a massive canary yellow diamond engagement ring.

Belfort may have been known as the Wolf of Wall Street, but in this instance both he and Naomi were singing like canaries. Belfort was thrilled to pamper his girlfriend with an amazing diamond to reflect her amazing beauty. The following is a Leibish & Co. close approximation of the ring that Belfort proposes with in the movie.

The movie was nominated for five Academy Awards and four British Academy Film Awards including for Best Picture and Best Actor (DiCaprio) in both Academies. DiCaprio actually won the Golden Globe for Best Actor – Motion Picture Musical or Comedy in one of the film’s two Golden Globe Awards nominations.

It is not surprising that the choice of engagement ring in the movie featured a yellow diamond center stone. Yellow diamonds are among the most popular of colors, and considered trendy and high end. They are also a favorite among the celeb set with Heidi Klum, Carrie Underwood, Paris Hilton, Adele, Kelly Clarkson, and Rebecca Romijn being recipients of yellow diamond engagement rings, among others. Given that all of these engagement rings were received prior to the release of the movie, this definitely seems to be a case of life imitating art rather than the other way around!
