Jewelry That Keeps You Safe

We've heard of all kinds of wearable technology that serve as jewelry as much as they serve as some of the coolest gizmos and gadgets around. These include the likes of smart watches, including gold and diamond Apple watches, and all sorts of necklaces and bracelets that have features such as heart rate tracking, sun exposure tracking, and much more. There are also jewelry pieces that have more than one purpose, such as the necklace that contains perfume to keep you smelling good and fresh all day long. Now there are jewels that aren't just designed to look pretty but to keep you safe as well.

Leaf Wearables

While countries all across the globe are trying to combat sexual assault, some countries suffer far more from this phenomenon than others. One such country is India, where a sexual assault case occurs every 22.5 minutes. In hopes of gaining some control over these occurrences, five brilliant engineering students at India's top colleges came up with “smart jewelry” that can help women protect themselves and prevent a potential attack.

How It Works

Leaf Wearables have come out with pendant necklaces, bracelets, and key chains that all contain a circular piece called SAFER, which is placed in the center of the piece. SAFER works in two ways. As soon as a threat becomes apparent, the wearer clicks twice on the SAFER button located on the jewelry piece. The device corresponds with an app, and upon triggering the alarm, an SMS is sent to the user's family and friends. In addition, the app's GPS allows the user and her network to view the nearest hospitals and police stations.

Beautiful and Affordable

This invention is good news for the women of India, and the women of the world as a whole. In a perfect world, such an item would be unnecessary, but unfortunately, that is not the case. These fashionable and potentially life saving jewelry pieces are not only beautiful, but affordable as well. Priced between $52 and $74, the jewels only take fifteen minutes to charge and can last a week. So far 5,000 units have been sold.
