The Mouna Diamond

The cushion-shaped, 112.53 carat, VS1 clarity, Fancy Intense Yellow Mouna diamond was sold by Christie's Geneva in 1998 to an anonymous Middle East collector for USD3,258,000 on behalf of its former owner, socialite and businesswoman, Mouna Ayoub.

Ayoub converted from Christianity to Islam to marry Nasser al-Raschid, a 40-year old businessman and adviser to King Fahd of Saudi Arabia. He was rumored to have built her a private running track around their estate after she proclaimed her love of jogging. After seventeen years of marriage, the couple divorced and as part of her divorce settlement, Mouna received the Mouna diamond together with other high-end pieces of jewelry.

Following the divorce, Mouna left Saudi Arabia for France. She attained French citizenship and became a successful businesswoman dealing in real estate. She is a well known French socialite and is a regular invitee for the annual Cannes film festival awards.

The 26 mm diameter stone was set in a baguette-cut mount by Bulgari. In this mount, the diamond has a height of 36 mm.
